I finished the War of the Flowers, sped through Agent to the Stars, and am now on Tower of Shadows. Oh reading - I've missed it. Although it means I haven't been spending as much time working on Greek or editing. It's fine, it's fine. But I do want to continue doing little thought-blurbs on each book.
First off, after reading the rather insubstantial Summoner, the prose in this book is much appreciated. As well as the characterization and plot. It drags a little at the beginning as you wonder just when all this backstory is going to be needed or mean anything, but as soon as the plot picks up the story itself is more than engaging. The first few, long chapters begin making sense towards the end of the book, but a lot could have been cut and remained just as effective. There are a number of dramatic plot twists sprinkled in the last fifth of the story, a few of which are actual twists, but the rest of which are things that everyone except the MC had long since figured out. So reading about how surprised and confused the MC was every time this happened - and the author goes into the MC's thoughts and feelings with a lot of depth - got a tad bit old after the second time.
And the ending... well, I understand the need to make things happy. And it wasn't too contrived. But there was a point that could have easily been an ending two chapters before and I might just take that as the ending because I'm a horrible person. xp
Overall, it was a good story. It was interesting and engaging and the characters felt real. The title threw me off a little - there wasn't much of a war and what war there was happened within a few chapters. But that's all right. The only other thing of note which I'm not sure what I think of quite yet was the constant reference to having to go to the bathroom. Characters were just peeing all over the place. Added a touch of realism, I s'pose, but it was rather incongruous and then completely forgotten as the plot really took on steam. I mean, if we're reminded constantly that the characters have bladders, you'd think it'd become crucial at some point when they're facing the baddies. That's probably why most authors just leave that bit out.
Hopefully today lady and I will be going to see Coraline. This should be an excellent adventure. Yesterday we spent with her friend Amber in Mulkiteo, eating cake and watching Buffy. You would be proud, Ana-cakes. <3
Work is doing mighty fine. The two horrible women have been moved downstairs and suddenly half my stress is gone. I've been told rather plainly by boss-lady that they will do many things to keep me and that she's trying to get me a better raise. I've also been offered a job in title, which would be much more interesting than what I've been doing, although I'm trying to keep the deed in lieu portion. I'm such a perfectionist - I want to get DILs up to date and with a system before leaving it. ^^()
I'm still way too tired when I get home and still fighting with the feeling of not actually doing anything with my life and still just trying to get myself to edit. Ah well. At least I can drink coffee again and the headaches are mostly gone.
