September!

There's a slight -- slight -- chill in the mornings now and that's enough for me to declare it fall. Seriously, the difference between biking the kids through a clear, 70-degree morning with that sunrise on the horizon and the soupy nonsense of mid-summer is enough to make me actually enjoy it again.

Plus, on a whim, I decided to try the ParkRun last weekend and the weather was finally nice enough I didn't die from becoming one with the soup. Well, "decided to try" is doing a lot of heavy lifting -- I'd been wanting to try it out but the kids were either up or not up or my wife had had a rough night and I didn't want to leave her on her own, but that Saturday, both children were awake at 6.30 and I thought to myself, "you are both going on a run with me."

So they did and we ended up having a lot of fun. To be fair, Cabin Girl brought her scooter so she was doing more of that than running. Caught the runners in their 2nd lap and joined in (there are 4 total), so I didn't run the whole 5k. But that didn't matter, because Cabin Girl was off scooting and folks were excited to see her there and I think she pretty much drank it all in. So much so, she immediately wanted to do it again the next day, which is when I broke the terrible news to her that the ParkRun is only a weekly event.

Still, she persisted in wanting to do it all week so we did it again yesterday! And we actually got there on time and joined in at the beginning and I thought, oh, I might run the whole thing--until Smol Doore decided to throw a fit in the stroller mid lap 3. Oh well. CG was pretty much done, then, too. But hey, she still wants to run next week, I think?

Honestly, I'm just stoked she wants to run with me. I love running and I hope I can instill a little bit of that in her before middle school running drills drive it out again.

On the writing front, apparently I can't not write. And/or the post-finishing-a-draft malaise just hit me real hard this week. I tossed the draft of cannibal!WIP to a few betas the week before the hurricane (good timing by the way) and then naively thought I'd use that morning time to read craft books. But alas, I'm already poking at the old swamp!WIP, convinced that now is the time I'll finally be able to crack it's plot.

The problem with swamp!WIP is that it has a solid setting (a walled-off city where stepping foot outside means risking exposure to various equatorial diseases, mostly mosquito-born), realized characters (esp the prerequisite side character whose voice is stronger than the MCs, ugh), but the plot is just this thin webbing of thing happens, thing happens, ??, ?? profit??

Whereas the problem with cannibal!WIP is it has an overabundance of plot and subplot, but the setting feels like cobwebs. If I could just mush the two together...

Anyway, gotta let cannibal!WIP sit, even as the doubt demons gather and begin their ripe harvest. Swamp!WIP is the one that actually got interest from my agent, way back when, if I could just. figure out. this plot.
