spryng: (companion cube ouch)
Well... now it's been a few days of work. It's so... easy. In fact, I've been neatly bored to tears half the time. And when not bored, time passes quickly, because what I do is half hunting for the right data and half figuring out what to do. I like that part, that's what made math fun for me. I'm sure even that will get boring soon as I figure out all the tricks, but for now the worst part is when I have nothing to do. I've asked for extra work several times now, but usually they just make me file.

Still. This is so many steps above customer service. I get to take a break whenever I want, get water when I'm thirsty, go to lunch when I'm hungry, get up and stretch, walk around the office, pester people incessantly with questions. The only limit is that I can't figure out where the limits lie. Can I come in early and leave early? Can I check my email? Are they meticulous about their hours or is it more of a don't-mention-overtime kind of office? You get your 40 hours every week even if some weeks are slightly less and some are slightly more? And apparently we get holidays off. I had to ask if we get Labor Day off because for the last four years I haven't; not in school nor at work. They laughed at me, but I think the answer was yes. I just don't know, though. So many little details that would be obvious to them. For example, the temp agency said it would be "business casual." The first day I showed up way over dressed - a blouse and black dress pants. Most people were wearing jeans. Some guys were even wearing polos. Two of them looked like they'd just walked out of class at NCF. Bizarre. I've been slowly dressing down since, but again, I don't know where the limits are.

Such whining. But seriously, so far this job is fantastic. The people are nice. The conditions are nice. Being paid so much to do so little is nice. The bus thing is working well, even though it's an hour from when I leave the apartment to when I get to the office, but at least I don't have to combat downtown traffic or pay the ridiculous parking fees. The walk to the bus stop is gorgeous in the morning and usually the air is so clear that I can see all of the mountains on the ride. Being surrounded by mountains is -still- surreal. This evening I could see most all of the Olympic range and whatever's to the east when I was walking home.

Overall, it's good. I'm also glad I don't intend to make a career out of it.
