Hadrian's Wall

Ever since we got back I've been reading about farming non-stop. Sheep farming. Dairy farming. Sustainable farming. Whole diet farming.

And the more I read, the more I understand the great and formidable task we would be undertaking. Raising chickens. Butchering chickens. Dealing with sick animals. Dealing with sick crops. Freezing weather. Heat and humidity. Always outside.

But I want it. I want it all. I want goats and cows and chicken and ducks. I want fruit bushes and trees and greens and grains. I want to make cheeses and gluten free breads and fermented foods and sausages. I've always told Lady I secretly wanted to be a hausfrau. And now - well, I could be. All the time. Hardcore, canning, jamming, fermenting, curdling hausfrau. I'm riding the high of excitement. With a communal farm, we could even raise children! Human children!

And it doesn't help (does help?) that Doug might have real land out in Virginia, that we could move there and farm either rent-free or cheap-rent. We're going to go take a peek at her land in October, and in the meantime I'm going to keep dreaming of berry fields and goats and apple orchards and greens.

Last week I might have bopped down to the co-op and picked up raw goat's milk. And this Sunday we might have slinked through the farmer's market and bought duck eggs. The verdict on both? Delicious. Absolutely. I may have even convinced Lady that ducks are a good idea. :)
