Gender: Truck

spryngI don't really talk about the Toddler much, but sometime in the last few months his gender became Trucks*.
It started with the flight to Colorado in July, after which he became obsessed with airplanes. I indulged him with some books about airplanes and then stumbled across some sciency youtube videos about airplanes. That sufficed for a time, but then he saw a video about trains when I was grabbing the airplane one and wanted that instead and I thought, surely I wouldn't discourage interest in trains.
Well, trains became buses became garbage trucks became basically everything that goes vroom. My second mistake was probably getting him a big interactive book about things that go, from construction vehicles to spaceships, and he has been absolutely enamored. But of course now he has discovered monster trucks and that is his laser-focus.
Even as I can see the chain of events that led to this, I have to also scratch my head and laugh. Despite two moms who put him in his sister's second-hand clothes, he is still a stereotypical boy. That said, he loves orange and pink, he plays with her old stuffies and dolls, and he'll even bring you a suffie if you get hurt, so I think we're doing a great job.
I just hope we can keep reinforcing that he can like whatever he wants, even as it becomes more difficult at daycare and eventually school. Cabin Girl didn't start spouting nonsense about what girls can/can't do until pre-k so we've got another year or two yet. I know we've come a looooooooong way with making sure little girls know they can Do Anything, but I suspect we haven't done the same for little boys, and I know it's generally tougher for them.
We'll fight that battle when we get there, but for now... it's getting cold and he needed new long sleeves, so I went to the second-hand store and picked out a shirt with Mickey, a shirt with stars, a shirt with a fire truck, and a shirt with a monster truck. <3
