August-ing Continues

spryngLast week I went to the Silent Book Club meeting at a local pub, where I got double-charged for seltzer water. 🙄 That small annoyance aside, the club was great, pretty much exactly what I'm trying to find in a group. It wasn't all silent, much to their detriment, perhaps, because one person mentioned needing more SFF recs and I couldn't be stopped after that.
I've already asked Dr Lady if I can go to the next one and she agreed. She took the kids to the trampoline park while I got to read and make friends, but apparently Cabin Girl was legit distressed not to have me there. Well, she got to have me all to herself this week, so it evens out.
IDK what's going on with these kids. I followed all the developmental leaps when they were babies but I can't wrap my head around what kind of mental shifts they're going through anymore. CG specifically is in a Mama Kai-only phase, which I thought we'd grown past. It could be because she sees the way Smol Doore actively prefers Dr Lady, and so she's reacting to that? But idk. It's better than the weird fights we were having over literally nothing just a month ago.
My birthday is this week and I have been doing crossfit a solid four weeks as my pre-birthday gift and I love it. Occasionally, I have to remind myself I'm not in my 20s anymore and to tone it down, but it feels good to go hard and be sore afterwards. And seeing the same folks every workout has been good for me, too. Between crossfit and these events, I think I'm starting to fill up my community well. Now, if I can just find a local writing friend...
Speaking of writing (yes I know this post is all over the place), after struggling mightily with the last 2-3 pages for daaaays, I actually finished the second draft of this WIP. It's at a place where I feel comfortable beta-ing it, since I've fixed the largest issues and desperately need to know if I'm even going in the right direction. I just... the last time I truly beta-ed a book was in 2014 with TIC, which was pre-pub, and now I don't really know what I'm doing. You'd think I'd know more, but I guess that whole the-more-you-learn-the-more-you-realize-you-don't-know thing applies to writing as well.
Anyway. I'll probably be active a bit more here mornings since I'm now actively not writing, but we'll see.
