tl;dr - idk what is going on but I might have pregnancy-induced lactose intolerance??

I've had unpleasant gastrointestinal distress since Thursday morning, although I suspect it started earlier in the week. I had cramping unpleasantness but just put it off as normal pregnancy stuff.

But then on Thursday it became very obvious my guts had stopped doing their one job - digesting food - and things quickly became very unfun. I ended up staying home Friday because I wasn't sure I could survive the car ride to work. :(

It's been getting better since then, but still hasn't entirely cleared up. I've been trying to draw lines between food intake and what's happening, thinking at first I'd just overdosed on nightshades, but now it's been three days since I've touched nightshades and nope.

Then I noticed this morning that right after having a few spoonfuls of kefir, it felt like someone was stabbing me in the stomach. I remembered this had happened a few times previously, and all those times lined up with dairy. So...

Google says that lactose intolerance can develop suddenly during pregnancy, because why not. I guess if I get to eat gluten and nightshades, it's only fair I give something else up, right?

I just really, really hope that this hypothesis is correct because the last thing I want to do is try to find a doctor. Predictably, the same day this started, my GP's office called to say my doc was "no longer with them." Which idk if that means she's dead or just decided that they're incompetent assholes (which, that office really really was) and moved elsewhere. Either way, if I have to see a real doc, it'll be 2-5 weeks, in which case what's the point.

Bah. I know I signed up for this, but I really didn't sign up for this.

Could be a number of things. I LIVED on tums for part of both pregnancies. Everything gave me heartburn.

When I had suspected lactose intolerance (not pregnant), the probiotic VSL was tremendously helpful to me. It's not cheap and it's OTC but it was really great. Made all the difference.
There is a 3 hour fasting blood test for lactose intolerance if you're interested- but kefir is mostly lactose free, so it might be something else?

Anyway, good luck!
