I just friended a lot of new people out in the LJ-verse and figured it's about time for a context/introductory post. I honestly don't even know if I've touched on all this in my regular posts anyway. :)

So, hi! I'm Kai. Just turned 29. I'm a writer who has just gotten the kiss of validation from an agent. I write novel-length fantasy and try not to talk too much about the writing process.

I've worked in real estate for the last seven years, but more the property records side of things than actually selling anything. I quit my comfy government job this past July for a dozen different reasons - depression, not enough time, work conditions were worsening, managers not listening, etc - to pursue a part-time job, but that got derailed because

My wife got a soft offer to move to France this fall. She graduated with a PhD in microbiology in May - she specifically studies bacteriophages, wee viruses that prey on bacteria - and was contacted by a researcher in Montpellier who has a potential opening in his lab. One of his postdocs applied for a better job, but won't know if he actually got it until September 17th. The researcher then proceeded to tell Dr Lady (my wife) about all the other projects she could work on if this one fell through, so it's pretty much down to a when, not if.

Still: it would be nice to know for certain!

My wife and I have been married for 3 years this September, but we've been together for 10 as of this coming January. We met in college and it was love at first cuddle. :)

We've been TTC (trying to conceive) since April, 2014, which both seems so long and so short ago. We will be ending our TTC journey very soon, but it all depends on the news from France. It has been extremely stressful for both of us and I have had a major relapse in depression. We saw a doctor about it when it had been over a year of trying and discovered I have PCOS. I've been on metformin since May and it seemed to be helping, but still no positive test. I have been coming to terms with what this means for us in the next few years, but I'm still in the middle of grieving the future I'd hoped we would have.

In the meantime, we are the proud managers of two rescued barn cats, Kona and Darjeeling. One is a silly lump who will let you pick her up and carry her around upside down and pet her to your heart's content, and one is a neurotic bundle who will stand for none of that crap, but will inevitably come and plunk herself down in the middle of whatever you're doing. So. Cats.

While we live in Arizona at the moment, we lived in Seattle for a few years before this, and college'd in Florida. I'm actually from Florida itself, but Dr Lady is from Minnesota.

I think that's about it for our lives right now. :)
