I had a Cesar Chavez day (a floating day off in the county), so I took it the only time I could (between classes and other coworkers taking the day off) and we vamoosed to San Diego. It's been lovely; I've forgotten how much I missed the ocean. Might have chased it around a bit this morning. Gotten a sunburn.

And then I took a nap and spent the rest of the afternoon purging google from my internet lifestyle. Unfortunately I haven't figure out a clever way to purge gmail without lots of effort and annoyance, so that's here to stay for a bit, but I finally dug in and switched out of iGoogle and away from Reader, both google projects that I had used heavily for the last six+ years and both projects google announced that they were pulling the plugs on in the last six months. I'm currently using uStart and feedly to replace them, respectively, but if any of ya'll have been using something you thing is better, let me know.

Same thing with google itself - I've been noticing over the past year (two, three) that my search results have been getting increasingly... circuitous. Or just useless. Or just so full up with about.com and yahoo answer pages that I want to strangle someone. Or the search disregards an important search term I entered for no apparent reason, then continues to ignore it when I even put it in quotes. Man, I remember the day when ""-ing a term actually meant something. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I've been through google's advanced options to no better effect.

This getting rid of reader and igoogle and growing substantially more dumbed down over the years has kind of irked me more than it normally might, because dammit, I used to like google. They were the newfangled thing. They were cool. They were better than metacrawler and the various search engines of ye olde dayes. But things change and now that's not remotely true. Dammit google, I don't want curtailed search results. I want to be able to search for "types of human meat cuts" or "what does a three-day-old corpse smell like" without any special treatment.

Anyway, I am also soliciting suggestions for your fave search engine, outside of google, bing or yahoo. Right now I'm trying out DuckDuckGo, which at least is all about non-customization, so we'll see.
