Things have been pretty quiet around here - a lot more work than normal at the job that actually pays me. Meanwhile, I'm up to reading partials as an intern, and mostly being flummoxed. It's a lot harder to turn something down once you've requested it, and especially with that disappointed feeling about what it could have been. And then there's the layer on top of that, where you have to wonder if it's salvageable, if the writer can possibly make this into something readable. And then, do you even want to deal with that when later down the line there might be someone who hands you a beautiful and polished manuscript? Those decisions only reaffirm my need to revise.

I'm skipping 25 for now because I keep running into the same wall I ran into with the previous question that forced me to narrow down all these people I know who are awesome. Also because this is my blog and I can. So there. :P

Day 26 - What kind of person attracts you?
I'm going to go at this one from the friend angle, since otherwise I'd just sit here and list all the ways I love my Lady. But those attributes that most make me want to befriend someone, or at least make me fascinated... I'd say, someone who is mostly positive, or at least can see the beauty in life, someone who is kind, someone who is awkwardly blunt, who enjoys reading, who enjoys art, who understands/loves/appreciates science, who is willing to argue a point, who is willing to admit that sometimes they just want to believe something, who can one-up me, who can out-crazy me, who appreciates crazy, or at least won't be deterred, someone who bakes, someone who hates baking with a passion, someone who simply does things with a passion, who has irrational hate towards stupid things like a number or a piece of furniture but can completely embrace that hate, someone who is complicated, someone who seems simple but is complicated in ways you can't even imagine, someone who hides their feelings carefully, only letting them out in ones or twos in careful situations so that it's like a treat, someone who wears their emotions on their sleeves so that nothing is ever a surprise except when suddenly it is, someone who can look you in the eye and call your BS, someone who plays along with your BS, someone who out BS's your BS, someone with a fondness for the way random objects can sometimes line up just right, someone who loves the sunset, someone who loves the sunrise, someone who can lie on a rock and talk for hours, someone who must always be doing something...

I second that on someone who BS's your BS!

So what kind of manuscripts do you get for the most part? I know no details allowed, but can we at least know the genres? I keep picturing tween vampire/alien romance for some reason...

It's actually almost everything. The woman I've been working with most closely does the fiction side of the agency, and she's expressed an interest in more of a YA/literary bent, but is willing to consider anything if it is engaging and well-written.

I think I would gouge out my eyes now if it were solely tween vampire/alien romance, although I've had a handful that have hit that one on the head, all of which were rejected out of hand.
