I'd been thinking about it for a while now, and off and on craving it. I know I'm iron deficient, and that's been one of my biggest struggles in my diet. It's hard to find iron that your body can absorb in the food I usually eat, and the food that does have it I don't eat on a regular enough basis, i.e. leafy greens, lentils, etc. And I really don't want to take another supplement if I'm not sure it will even help - I already taken 5-HTP and some oil.

So I had meat for the first time in seven years and beef specifically for the first time in ten. It was really not much like I remembered it - the TVP stuff is remarkably similar. I'm pretty much already writing it off as a lapse, unless it does an amazing job at making me feel less shitty, because it was actually kind of... ick. I'd rather not cure my iron deficiency that way. But it is also helping me re-examine just why I'm still a veg', which is another step in my N Steps to Self Betterment and World Domination. I might do a more thorough post on that in a few days.

But for now, I leave you with beef.

Wow. Do you feel okay? I remember the first time I had meat after a few years, I regretted it all day.

That said, I still can't finish a burger and really, am not interested in them even though I've gone back to chicken and pork. Guess some things just aren't as interesting!

This is from an omnivore's point of view, but I don't think I would have chosen ground beef as the red meat to go back to for the first time in years. Perhaps a lean but tender cut of steak would go over better with you, like a nicely prepared top sirloin or slow-cooked eye of round. Most types of ground beef are noticeably fatty, especially when compared with steak and not-meat protein.

No, I have good ideas. >>
The ground beef was just easiest. But yeah, in terms of taste, I totally should have gone with something else...

I don't know if this would help you or not, but I'm a vegetarian and I eat Total (actually, wal-mart's cheapo version of it) for breakfast every morning because it's supposed to have 100% iron.
Frosted Mini Wheats has 90% of daily iron if I'm not mistaken. Could be an easy way to sneak some in there if you like cereals.

The problem I've had with getting iron from breakfast cereals is that even though it's supposed to be 50 or 100%, it doesn't all get absorbed. Whatever they use for that iron content is not absorption friendly, or whatever the term is. Of course, this coupled with the mass amount of tannins I'd consume along with it was probably also not helping. I should probably try again now that I'm not drinking the teas right away in the morning.
