I just found out one of my old coworkers who left over the summer to work in a restaurant closer to his family died in December. He was only 30.

I made friends with him while doing audits for our title department and then we both were moved downstairs to another department and continued being awkward friends there. He told me about how he'd previously worked with the company, then quit to pursue a writing career, only to come back a year later when his funds ran out. Apparently video games had been more alluring than his novel about alien robots. We chatted about random stuff, but mostly chortled over the really weird ways borrowers would try and claim they didn't owe any money. I told him about the swamp cows in FL and he told me about the swamps of northern WA. He never seemed happy working there, which is utterly understandable, but he actually got his shit together and got a job working at a restaurant closer to his family, so he left.

He took me to tacos once. I think there was some confusion. I bought him tacos later before he left. He was a silly man, and very tall. He was a vegetarian for a short time while I knew him.

Per the obituary, he died suddenly. I don't really know what that means, so I'm going to say he died while defending the world from zombie swamp cows. He'd like that story more, anyway.
