Late Morning

Wow, I haven't slept in past eight for probably almost a year. I stayed up much too late last night and it's cloudy and misty this morning, which always messes with my internal alarm clock.
Yesterday was a good day. It was a day filled with blueberries and lavender, which is pretty hard to beat in my book.
I've been wanting to go fruit picking of some kind all summer. We tried to go strawberry picking in June, but the only place we managed to find that heralded itself as u-pick was closed when we got there, with a little sign saying they were at the farmer's market. I'd pretty much given up after that except for maybe some apple picking come autumn, when I saw an article in the local newspaper bemoaning the fact that all the blueberry picking places around were abounding with wonderful blueberries due to the crazy heat we've been having and which, due to said crazy heat, were left unpicked. Blueberry picking, huh? The Pacific NW is apparently a place of plenty for blueberry lovers, but it never crossed my mind that they might have open fields like they do with strawberries.
So I dragged Lady out of bed bright and early Saturday morning, gave her coffee, and we drove the half hour or so out of town, down these winding back roads, to this blueberry farm. We got there at 10am and it was already pretty busy. They had cute little blue metal buckets which we grabbed and then walked the length of the field to the back.
There were a lot of unripe ones, but the ones that were ripe were amazing.

It took a few minutes to get the hang of it and get over the surprise of spiders, but then it didn't take long before we had too many. Lady seemed to have a knack for finding spiders and nearly stuck her head in a web more times than I can count.

But it was overcast and cool and awesome despite the multitude of spiders. We filled our buckets much too quickly. When we tried to leave, though, we kept spotting another handful of delicious looking blueberries and would, of course, have to go over and grab those. Finally we did manage to leave and now we have five pounds of blueberries in the fridge and although I keep making plans to make scones or muffins or pancakes, they're just so good on their own.

Well, we can always go back next weekend and pick more.
Afterward we went to a lavender farm where you could cut your own lavender. It's a bit late in the season for lavender, but it still smells amazing. There were also a horde of bees; bumblebees, honey bees and some sort of bee-like fly. Lady was too entranced by the bees to help cut the lavender, which is one of the reasons I love her so much. I wish I had taken my camera with me then. Tja, next time.
Today is for making gnocchi, eating cupcakes, going on walks, and writing. Here's to a good Sunday.
