Birfday Month
Aug. 10th, 2023 02:06 pmHello August!
Despite the oppressive, unstoppable march of time, I'm weirdly glad for this month. Cabin Girl goes back to school (today!), yes, but also it's my birthday month which means I'm affording myself the rare opportunity to actually think about what I want and then -- gasp! -- go for it.
My life has felt very backstage for a few years now, partially because of the pandemic, partially because of our move, partially because of the littles, and partially because, well, I just didn't know how to get back on track.
But things have been stable enough now that I'm starting to get my feet fully under me again. And have time to think about where I want to go from here. And I really, really want to just send my roots out into this little community we're calling home and get to know it and -- eventually -- work for its embetterment. Either through politics (city council seat, anyone?) or volunteering or just... showing up.
Since 2016, the we've watched a lot of what we'd fought so hard for start to slip through our fingers. While things on the national level seem impossible to affect, it's still possible to make an impact on the local level. Hence *gestures above* But first, I have to spend more time getting to know this place we've chosen as our home, which means its people, its groups, its events. I've gleaned a lot passively through reading up on the news, talking with folks, etc, but I want to do *more*.
And, you know, maybe make some more friends. Especially like-minded ones.
In that track, I've got three social events I've already rsvp'ed for (gulp) as well as committing to watching, if not actually attending, the two city council meetings this month. If only the bike/ped committee was meeting in August, I'd add that, too.
The events are:
1. A panel that the local writer's group is putting on. They do this monthly but it's smack dap in the middle of a Sunday afternoon which makes it difficult to attend, what with the kids. But they love the library and maybe I can get CG's friend to come along, too. I've been curious about this group for a while but haven't had a chance to actually meet anyone from it.
2. A silent book club meeting. Also a monthly event, but even harder to attend because kids aren't known for being silent or letting me read. Still: I'd hopefully get to meet readers and other interesting folks.
3. PRIDE open house. I helped them move in July and now want to actually meet other queer folks, preferably of the politically active variety. And maybe some other queer parents? Either way, this group works with a lot of other groups in the community and puts on the annual PRIDE event in October, so I want to get my foot in.
4. Still TBD if they're meeting this month, but there's a group of queers who go out and do something together regularly. Last month they watched Barbie together, for example.
Anyway, whew, that's a lot, but it's also just a start. I'll try to remember and update how it goes. First event is this weekend!
