Metrics, Day 5
Oct. 5th, 2012 09:10 pmStart: 129/199, 79,822/123,484
End: 131/200 81,099/123,640
Another poor showing, mostly because I traded out my evening writing time for a date night, which was well worth it (German food and beer! yes!!). But also because I finally came to the (inevitable) conclusion that a quarter or the story simple doesn't fit and will have to go.
I've known this for a while and simply hadn't wanted to admit it, let alone confront it, because at the time it felt like it would be a whole lot of rearranging and re-jiggering of plot elements to make everything fit around the hole it left behind. But since I've been considering it more seriously lately, I suppose my subconscious had enough time to figure it out and how it'd work on its own, so now the need to delete a fourth of the plot has gone from unthinkable to manageable and preferable. It simply fixes and simplifies so many things I'd been struggling to force into place, even if it means cutting out some of my favorite scenes and characters. But even if they're good scenes and good characters, if they're unnecessary to the plot then they just won't ever work. :/
Aah. I know. I know. "Kill your darlings" is probably the most cliched and bandied around piece of writing advice - because it's true. But that doesn't make it any easier to do. Even when I know the story will be so much stronger for it.
