On Monday my teeth decided to revolt. I thought I'd just bitten down too hard or possibly ground too much in my sleep (according to Lady I do this on occasion - who knew?), but when it neither went away nor abated by Tuesday, I knew it was time for dental intervention.

The dentist, surprisingly, had an opening that evening.

So lady took me and I said, "this tooth here, this one, it hurts :(" and they nodded and said why yes, it appears there's a shadow there, that could be awful. To see the extent of the shadow, they took an x-ray, developed it, and then first the assistant poured over it and then the dentist doctor herself. And neither of them could find anything.

Aside, of course, from my old root canal.

They poked and prodded around some more, had me bite down on things until I was able to point them again to yea hurty tooth, conferred, evened my bite, had me bite down again, and came to the conclusion that as far as they could tell, nothing was wrong. Perhaps now that they had fixed my bite the pain might go away. But if not, I had to see a root canal specialist.

A root canal specialist? I laughed and asked, does that mean they'll have to cut open that sad, sad tooth, which at one point had had a temp cap for much too long, followed by said root canal, and do even more horrible things to it? Yes, they said with unfeigned gravitas. Yes, they would.

So now I have a referral to said specialist with instructions to make an appointment if the pain doesn't go away soon. If it's the bite, I thought, surely it'll hurt less by morning?

It didn't.

...to be continued?
