Mar. 16th, 2024 06:59 amThis week was not only spring break, but also Pi Day and Ides of March. Let's just say, a triple Kai treat.
Since Cabin Girl was out of school, I promised to take a day off of work and hang with her. She initially chose Thursday, which I thought serendipitous (what better way to spend pi day than with your kiddo, sampling all the pies in town?) but two days before we found out my wife needed the car all day. Thankfully, CG was cool with Friday instead.
She's been really wanting to learn how to rollerskate, as both her school and afterschool care place have done fieldtrips to the local rollerskating rink. Problem is, when they go, it's usually crowded and no one's available to help the kids learn how to skate, so she plays in the indoor playground instead. I, also, don't know how to skate, so we figured we would learn together.
Friday afternoon of spring break is apparently the Time to Go to the rink, as it was nearly empty. I'd spent some time earlier in the week watching How to Skate videos, so I had more confidence than usual. Still, as soon as the skates were on, I remembered how much trying to balance on wheels was absolutely terrifying.
But we were learning together, so that helped. And watching her steadily get her feet under her was such a treat. By the end, I was mostly confident in not falling over and she was going around the rink on her own. That said, I felt like I hadn't really achieved much and am not any further at actually being able to rollerskate. Maybe it's just a block for me, like dance. Or maybe I need more than 2 hours at the rink with already sore and wobbly legs.
The important thing is that CG had fun. She told Dr Lady all about how we spent all day at the rink and how she was going faster than me by the end. So all in all, a successful day.
We also went biking in the morning and made it halfway to her school before turning back. I love how much she's taken to biking, and how much she seems to love it. I wish it were easier to get to the bike trails from here, but at least she's learning how to navigate around cars.
I'd already put in for Thursday so I went ahead and took it off from work. Turns out I really needed it; I spent the morning doing a trial trail run (say that five times fast), since the 10k next weekend will be all on trails. I forgot how much slower trail running can be, what with constantly scanning for hazards and all the soft sand. I ran a 9k last weekend on the paved bike trail and that went surprisingly well. Felt great and carrying water helped stave off the dry-mouth panic.
In theory, I'm going to do another trail run tomorrow, this time 5.8 miles / 9.3k (that's the trail loop, anyway), but my gods, my quads are still so sore. On Wednesday we did 10 sets of 5 light(ish) squats, which I thought would be fine, but clearly not because I've been struggling to stand/sit/squat since. IDK if I can do a long run while still this sore, but I guess I'll see how I feel tomorrow.
One week until the 10k. Only a little nervous now.
