First Week's End
Jan. 6th, 2024 07:28 amKept to the short journaling for a full week, so I'm going to copy it here to both a) look back on the week and b) archive it in case this little notebook gets lost.
Jan 1 - 6k run on the Hawthorne trail (foggy!); Depot Park with kids, then having pizza nearby; Frozen II with both kids and Toddler excitedly pointing to Elsa; Toddler playing with CG's old Anna and Elsa dolls; reading the Hobbit to CG
Jan 2 - CG making her own omelette; thinking about growing old with wife; filling out the recipe book with mom's chocolate cookie recipe and my pumpkin chili; having a quiet day; finishing reading a book (THE WARDEN); gathering up the courage to put myself on my agent's schedule
Jan 3 - waking up in time to decide to go to Crossfit; comment from a fellow Crossfitter about how I'll be that 95 year old who's still kicking; writer's group seeming genuinely glad that I was there; giving good feedback at group :); playing Portal 2 with CG and getting to the "I am a potato" moment
Jan 4 - again waking up early enough to do the hard thing (Crossfit); finding CG reading to Toddler on our bed, and he's copying what she's saying as if he's reading, too; CG's excitement that someday she'll get to be a 5th grader and read to Toddler's class; beautiful midday walk to the library; being tagged for an important project at work
Jan 5 - 4k run, easy peasy; new crossbody purse that will actually fit my laptop!; tasty homemade stir fry with salmon lunch; um! CG getting on her bike and actually being able to bike?? Her excited face!; CG eating an entire stalk of broccoli while also playing with it and Toddler
Have to say it's been an interesting exercise so far. I described it to my wife as a gratitude journal, and I think that's actually what it is, even if it wasn't what I set out to do. I'm purposefully trying to capture good things, or at least the positive side of things. I've noticed so far that most happy things are about family and the dayjob is just a void, lol. Which also... tracks.
And as far as slowing things down, this week doesn't feel like it got away from me as much as most do and re-reading the entries is a really nice reminder of what has happened.
If you didn't read behind the cut, CG popped onto her bike yesterday and legit rode. After months of trying and frustration and practice, the fact that she actually managed to keep it going and pedal, if not for more than a dozen feet, was actually amazing. She's gotten the balance, which is the hardest part; now she just has to practice until she can go as far as she wants. She also needs a bike her size, which will most likely help a lot -- she's riding a 16" when she needs at least a 20".
So that's our plan for today/this weekend. Get her a properly sized bike and go crazy. :) I'm excited -- biking was my ticket to freedom as a kid and also I can't wait to take her on some of the trails around here.
