We spent most of June hanging out with our friends who were leaving in July--have now left--and trying to stay cool. Summer always hits like a fist in North Florida, because things are kind of like, "ok, ok, this is fine, this isn't so bad" then the next day are "OW MY SKIN IS MELTING." This year it was even more sudden because of some weird cold snap in May that let us throw open the windows.

Idk how I forget that summer only really starts in July. So gird your loins, find a cool pool, and hunker down until October.

Speaking of cool pools, one of the things I love about this area are the springs. 72 degree bodies of water year-round, which make for a refreshing shock in summer and--supposedly, I haven't tried it yet--a balmy dip in winter. I let Cabin Girl play hookie from summer camp a Friday ago and we went to one of the springs.

We'd tried it last year and it was just too cold for her small body, but she must've grown enough in the meantime because she had a BLAST. Most of the springs around here are basically a large swimming pool's width of water, with some shallow bits before it dips deep into a wide gap of stone where the water's all coming out. This is fun because you can both easily walk around a bit and dive deep, which Cabin Girl discovered and greatly enjoyed. She's come a long way with swimming in the past year, and I'm so proud of her (tbf I'm just kinda lowkey constantly proud of her).

So we had a great time two weeks back and she really wanted to return and bring a friend. We picked yesterday, hoping a Sunday would mean it's just us heathens, and after struggling to get out the door for about an hour finally headed out. Only... to notice... large looming clouds on the horizon. :/

You have to remember: it's not normal to have thunderstorms in the mornings in FL. Or at least, it didn't used to be. Climate change is really fucking things up.

So I can be forgiven for looking at the weather forecast, seeing "storms," and assuming we'd be fine before noon.

Reader. We were not.

The sky opened up as soon as we got there. There wasn't really thunder, so I asked everyone if they were cool with getting soaked and got the affirmative. We were fully soaked before we got to the spring and it was still very busy. And it was still fun, but I soon realized why we had tried to plan for a hot day: the kids couldn't warm up after being in the spring. :( And all the towels were in the car because otherwise they would've been soaked...

Cold, we were all cold in July, in friggin Florida. Of all the days, of all the times... and of course, that afternoon the sun broke through and it was back up to 100.

All I can hope is that the kids will trust us and try again. They seemed to have fun, at least. Except for the cold part. ^^()
