2012 Winter Open and Brain Vomit
The 2012 Winter Open in Prescott was pretty epic. I must really love this sport if I even enjoy watching the competitions. And man, we had the best spot in the house - a second story perch from which we could watch the whole thing. I took a few photos when I could, but the score-keeping actually ate up the majority of our time, especially when the gym's internet crashed from the sheer load of people trying to get on the wi-fi. Eventually the IT guy just took down the wi-fi and hooked us up directly and after that things were smoother than butter.
We found ourselves rushing a few times not because we were running out of time, but simply because we wanted to watch the rest of the current workout. There were some pretty impressive numbers and the guy who won the men's won by a remarkable margin. The women were even more impressive - all three who placed were easily in their late 30s or 40s. It was a helpful reminder that getting to that place takes time and dedication, years of it. And pushing past 30 doesn't mean you can't compete with the 20-year-olds. Far from it.
It was also pretty cool to watch all these athletes do the same sort of things we do in our crossfit classes, just x100. I mean, I get that that's the point, but I still enjoyed pointing and going, "hey, I can do that! ...except half the weight and a whole lot slower."
Now that I'm psyched to compete sometime in my 30s, it's brain vomit time:
- Volunteering at the food bank is fun! I shoveled compost for three hours today. ...ow
- I am supposed to hear from the temp agency sometime today regarding another short project for the same guy I worked for last week. And, of course, the longer the day goes on without a call, the more hopeful I get that maybe I can have Tuesday off. That would be nice, especially because
- I got a call from the charter school today. I'm going in on Friday to observe a class of 5th/6th grade Latin and then, if I'm not scared off, probably figure out a time to do their demo class. That is, part of the application is actually going into and teaching one of their classes. For reals. Hence, why I would like to have Tuesday off, so I can go and read up on what you are supposed to do with 5th graders. Oh man.
- I also got an email from the county in regards to the title examiner position I applied for weeks ago. I get to take a test for them next Wednesday. Hooray?
- I'm super excited about Tucson Festival of Books, mostly because I went to the volunteer orientation yesterday and got all oriented. Also, they told us to spread the word of the festival (who among my Tucsonan friends doesn't know about it, anyway? I don't think that's possible) and also of the ongoing need for volunteers. So you Tucsonans, if you have a free Sunday morning and then a few hours during the weekend of March 12th, you should totally volunteer with me. You get a shirt! It'll be fun!!
- I am really tired and possibly a little loopy. You can tell from! all of the !! exclamation points!!!1
- Oh, and we signed up for the AZ Warrior Dash before we could chicken out. Because I was about to chicken out. We can do this!! (
- There is food to be made. I need to go make it.
