Sep. 8th, 2008 08:22 pmThe leaves are turning. At least the ones outside our apartment. It's so cool. ^-^ Literally.
Many things in the last few days. So, since I'm sleepy and filled with delicious Indian food, I think bullet points are a good idea:
- I dyed my hair yesterday. With actual dye. And now I remember why I use henna instead. Real dye is intense and smelly and made my scalp feel funny. Although, it didn't actually stain my skin like henna does...
- Went to Mulkiteo to visit lady's friend Amber as well as go to a lighthouse festival. Amber has the sweetest bird. She has a dog as well, which kept trying to lick the bird, and the bird would just sit there and give him a look. xp
- Received Plato's Ion in the mail on Sunday and managed to actually translate some yesterday. I can read Greek...! kinda...
- omg Ethiopian food, want it now and often, but they're closed on Monday, hence the Indian instead, which is equally delicious -and- delivered. How can I not love this place?
- MOUNTAINS
- the more that I think about it, the more I really want to continue with academia. Actually having to write papers and whatnot still seems intimidating, but I imagine it'd be easier once in the loop. And one of the things I hate most about this job is that there's so much time where I could be doing -other- things. I get paid to do nothing and it sucks because I don't want to spend the parts of the day when I'm most awake doing nothing - I want to get paid doing the things I'd like to do when I get home, if I wasn't so sleepy, like writing and studying. Writing my thesis was wholly exciting and I really only had problems when I let myself get overwhelmed or distracted. I would do it again, especially with the experience I have, which would hopefully make it infinitely better. And I loved tutoring since it meant I got to talk about one of my favorite subjects. Therefore.
- Speaking of writing, I've gotten into the habit of getting up by 5:30 every morning just so that I have a full hour to write before work. It's a good habit, even though at first I farted most of that time away with frivolous things online, but many mornings I've written for the full span and then left foaming at the bit when I have to go to work. And I think it's working. I think I'm actually not too far from finishing the story I'm working on. Granted, it's only part one, but I've never gotten this far on this story during it's myriad of reincarnations.
- Furthermore, I really want to finish and revise something before potential grad school next fall. I really want to see if I can pull out a novel on the side of a full-time job, since that's been my goal all along. Maybe. Of course, I can't decide which I want to go with, although it'll probably end up being whatever my NaNo is, which is looking like it might be another crack at Dreamer. Becky came back to me today and she told me all the reasons for her OCD and reminded me that I've recently fallen for the realm of faerie. Darn you, Susanna Clarke and John Connolly!
- Yes, so I'm very excited about writing again. I feel like the writer's block I had broke and now I'm being flooded with ideas. Of course, I partially blame/thank the long, empty hours at work when I can stew in my own thoughts...
- Lady's sister is coming on Wednesday with her hubby. They'll be staying downtown for a few nights, then with us on our futon. We bought sheets for it today, brilliantly red. So hopefully there will be an official verdict on the sleepability of it. I've found it starts to hurt a little to sit on after a while, but while stretched out in the napping position, it seems just fine.
- We've been getting local fruits and vegetables delivered every other week and as I had hoped it's forced us to use vegetables we normally wouldn't use and cook dishes we normally wouldn't cook. Yesterday was red cabbage Indian style, with crushed cardamon and tomatoes and it looked very odd and suspiciously purple, but tasted surprisingly well. We also have been getting peaches and nectarines, which I don't normally eat, but these are wonderful. omg. Tomorrow we'll be getting more cabbage (...yay?) as well as parsley. Maybe I'll actually make tabbouleh for once. I never do, since I never want to actually buy parsley.
- Speaking of tabbouleh, I made hummus the other night. Deceptively easy and good. o.o
- In other news, life is exciting and good. The only boring part is the job, but at least I can use my coworkers to find out more about Seattle and the Northwest in general. For example, I hadn't even considered that these mountains might be used for skiing. Sweet! And as previously shown, even the downtime at work can be useful.
- Have I mentioned it's beautiful here? It's SO BEAUTIFUL.
- And last, we passed the one month mark of being here and I didn't even notice. Now we've been here for five weeks. I've been working for a month. Damn. How'd that happen?
