On getting fit
Jan. 12th, 2024 06:57 amI've successfully managed to do Crossfit (somewhat) regularly for 6 months without injuring myself. I am pretty happy about that, and how careful I've been, but also ready to start pushing myself a little more. One of my classmates keeps encouraging me to move heavier weights and I'm constantly surprised when I can. I think I spent so long being careful that I forgot what I can actually do, and it turns out I'm pretty damn strong. Not like, competitively or anything, but I'm able to keep up with folks in the class who've been doing this consistently for years.
So I think a good goal for the next 6 months will be to find that sweet spot between staying careful/safe and pushing myself. Like, adding an extra five-ten pounds to what I think I can do and trying it. Starting at the rx (prescribed, aka, what's suggested) weight or amount instead of always going a little below. In fact, this week I even picked a weight above rx on one of the workouts and it was fine, actually.
The encouragement buddy called me out for picking the easier choice for a workout and I realized I've been more concerned with keeping up / being first than actually challenging myself. So: no more easier choices. If I'm going to hurt myself, that's one thing. But I've definitely proven I can push myself without risking injury, and am probably going a little too easy, too often.
It'll be fun to see what I can do when I stop limiting myself.
Outside of Crossfit, it's been my recent goal to up my running mileage. Well, kilometer-age, but that doesn't really roll off the tongue. I've been stuck at the 5k range for years now, and part of that is because I don't run as often as I used to. Looking back at my logs, I'm averaging once a week which is fine for maintenance but not gonna improve anything anytime soon. So I'm trying to add in 1-2 more runs a week, at minimum running more than 10k, preferably more than 10m.
It's... harder than I'd thought. ^^() Funny how the extra time to run those extra k doesn't magically show up once I decide to do it. Surprise! So I've been trying to squeak in runs during the work day, which as made me realize how uncomfortable I am with running during the day in general. Folks are out and could see me huffing and puffing along. But it's the only time I'll be able to do extra running, so... best get comfy with uncomfy.
And idk if my body is truly changing comp with all this weightlifting and running (and a keener eye on what I'm eating, too), but my shirts have been looser and even my running shorts have started feeling looser. Could be the elastic going in 'em, but I've had them 4, 5 years and they certainly almost feel like I need to go a size down. It's not one of my goals, but it's still nice to see/feel.
Anyway, here's to 6 more months of Crossfit and being injury-free!
