I got my strobe on Tuesday and likely will be playing with it for quite a bit. I never realized how much light plays into a photo. Obviously, subject matter is still top, but you can make some rather boring scenes pop with a well-placed light.
I've been following the tutorials at Strobist, which is a blog put up by a photojournalist for the Baltimore Sun. He's a big advocate for off-camera lighting and spends a great deal of time explaining every little thing about lighting as well as deconstructing some of his own photos. Seriously, if you're even a little interested in photography, you should check it out.
Well for this one, I followed one of his later tutorials in regards to ambient + strobe and took Lady out to the beach for a sunset. If I wasn't using a flash, I would have needed a stand and a long exposure, which would have needlessly bleached the sunset. With the strobe, I could get both Lady properly exposed and the sunset. Of course, it took a lot of tinkering and I obviously could have softened the lighting a little with an umbrella, but, well. Didn't really feel like lugging out all that when I was self-conscious enough with just the strobe. And there were people, so many people, but once I got going, it was easy to forget about them. And, most telling, none of them pointed and laughed.
Maybe I can get good at this...
