[personal profile] spryng
While 2016 sucked for the world, it sure was kind of the best on a personal level. Okay, maybe at times not so much the best, but certainly a world of change. Since there is one more amazeballs thing I am waiting to share, though, I'm going to put off my contemplative 2016 post a little longer and do the Year in Review Meme instead.

1. What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before?
Got pregnant
Loved my day job
Built web trainings
Visited Michigan
Moved to Michigan
Drove cross-country with cats (oh god never again please)
Bought a new car
Bought a(n old) house
Been unable to write
Understood what it was like not to have the drive to write
Visited Texas
Baked cookies in a car
Started and then forgot to finish (multiple) DITL(s)
Built a garage gym
Everything house-related
Worked remotely
Had a job that so very much wanted to keep me <3
Gave birth (would not recommend)
Had an epidural (would recommend)
Did not sleep for more than 4 hours at a stretch for (over) six months
That thing I can't talk about yet

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
My goals for 2016 were to read and write more, both of which got thrown out the window when pregnancy hit. Holy Batballs, hormones & exhaustion are nothing to joke about.

My goal for 2017 is to go with the flow and figure out my new life rhythm with baby. I want to both accept that my life will never be what it was, but also continue to be my own person and pursue my own passions, separate from the identity of mother. It will be a delicate balance, but one worth maintaining.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Me! Hahaha. Also my brother('s wife).

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, thank god. Had enough of that last year.

5. What countries did you visit?
None. This year was all about the states.

6. What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?
Sleep. Hah. But also a written (and rewritten [and rewritten]) book.

7. What date(s) from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Oct 10/11, because I am never going to forget a 3 hour labor.
Nov 8/9 - the certainty that we'd have a female president and then the absolute horror when Tang-flavored Mussolini was elected instead.
Aug 8 - closing on our house
July 22/23 - my friend's two day wedding extravaganza

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I'd say having a kid but honestly, that was pretty passive.
No, it would have to be ******* ***** ****** * ***** **** **** **** ***.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Being such a jerk to my friends, even if it was because hormones, and also being a jerk to my wife, even if because sleep dep. I have seen the darkest depths of my self this year and, while helpful to my growth as a better person, my loved ones shouldn't have had to see it too.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Does pregnancy count? Oh yeah, I also had my first bout of stomach flu and it sucked.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Hmm. Honestly, a barbell and a set of bumper plates.

12. How did you earn your keep?
Customer support and web training development.

13. Where did most of your money go?
A house and car and plane tickets.

14. What was your best month?
June was pretty fun. I was feeling better after the nausea and exhaustion of the first tri, my friends were being awesome, I could still physically do a lot, my wife was showing improvement with her foot, we knew where we were moving, we were car shopping (which is fun), and there was a lot to do at work.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
****** **** **** **** ***!!!! Also knowing where we were going to move to, also looking for a house, also that first (and second [and third]) positive pregnancy test.

16. What song will always remind you of 2016?
Good Morning Tucson because it's what we sang to Lady Jr in utero and now what we sing to her every morning. It is very baby appropriate (not really).

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter. Oof. My hips are huge.
iii. richer or poorer? Hmm. Well, richer because both Lady and I make more now, but poorer because we dumped a ton of that into a house and a car and a cross-country move.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Spent time with my friends in Tucson. Slept.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

20. What steps will you take to actively change what you're unhappy with?
Practice letting things go. Practice acknowledging the things I can't change. Breathing more. Snapping less.

22. What's something you learned about yourself?
I can be mean. I am a product of my family and sometimes that is good and sometimes that is not so good. I have to keep working on being a better person.

23. What's the one thing you thought you would never do but did in 2016?
Get pregnant. I honest to god had given up.

24. What was your favorite TV program (not Doctor Who!)?
Jane the Virgin. It is so ridiculous and fun and got me through many a long, baby-filled night.

25. Did you know anybody who got married?
One of my best friends! Who I never expected would get married!

26. What states did you visit in 2016?
Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana (however briefly), and Michigan

27. Where were you when 2016 began?
My friend Doug's house, sitting around a fire, eating s'mores, and not drinking.

28. Who were you with?
Sharon and Doug and Lora and Lady and some of Doug's friends.

29. Where will you be when 2016 ends?
In our house in Michigan. I may or may not stay up, we'll see.

30. Who will you be with when 2016 ends?
My parents and my wife and the baby.

31. What was the best book you read?
On the Edge of Gone by Corinne Duyvis.

32. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Elle King. God, her voice.

33. What did you want and get?
A baby.
To know where we'd be living for the next few years.
Change & new life experiences.
* ******* **** ****

34. What did you want and not get?
More hikes with my wife before we left Arizona
Friends in MI
A book written
More books read
A female president
Or for that matter, a president who isn't an incompetent narcissistic fuckwit

35. What was your favorite film of this year?
The new Ghostbusters. I now demand all remakes have an all-female cast.

36. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 30 and worked on my birthday for the first time. We had celebrated the previous weekend when [livejournal.com profile] pennywhistle came to visit. I also took birthday maternity photos of me lifting, which was a sweet morale boost. I saved a few cupcakes for my actual birthday, but otherwise we didn't really do anything.

37. Where did you go on vacation?
Ah, vacation. Yeah that didn't really happen this year. We visited family in Texas, which I guess kind of counts, and we went to a wedding in Virginia and we flew - twice - to Michigan, but none of that was what I consider vacation, i.e. relaxing and just us doing our thing. Maybe I should redefine vacation.

38. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?
Comfy shit. Loose shirts and skirts and, in the end, whatever the hell still fit. Right now it's loungewear and whatever I don't mind getting drool or spit up on.

39. What kept you sane?
Friends. Walks. So many walks. Music. My wife. Knowing this, too, shall pass.

40. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Meh. I should change this question, but I can't think of anything to change it to.

41. What political issue stirred you the most?

42. Did you have to go to the hospital?
Well, yes. Thank god for epidurals.

43. How many concerts did you see in 2016?
None :(

44. Did you have a favorite concert in 2016?
Another question to change.

45. Who was the best new person you met?
Does Lady Jr count? If not, Lady's new friend who also really likes books.

46. Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
Snapping at my wife.

47. What was your most embarrassing moment of 2016?
Oh god. Every time I cried at Crossfit. That was awful. I was just so tired and weak and far behind everyone else and I hated it.

48. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016:
If you work and work and work and work at something and despair and keep going and give up but keep going anyway - sometimes what you worked so hard for will happen.

49. What are your plans for 2017?
Concrete plans include a foray to GA to see my grandmum and a family reunion in NE in July. Work plans include writing one book, revising another, and starting a third. Life plans include taking care of a baby and myself through all of that.

50. Quote something that sums up your year:
“I am not throwing away my shot!”
